At the Gonzaga game, I sat with my friends from Athens.  Coach Pearl had pleaded with the UT fans to be an active part of the game.  Anyone who was there heard and saw how INACTIVE the crowd was except for a couple of times for a couple of minutes.  My friends who have been BB fans for at least 35 years each brought it up and one of them said she could not believe how the fans just sat when UT obviously needed help against a good team [that had stomped them earlier].  Their comment was that UT fans were too "comfortable."   Now, granted Coach Pearl's style is "herky jerky" and a little hard to watch due to lack of flow in the games, but I think my friends were onto something.

I didn't post the comments then, but then I went to the WildCa$h game and could not give a ticket away.  There were at least 1,000 empty seats and as far as help from the crowd, I would say there were again a couple of times when it got loud and intense enough to help.

I also went Saturday and took the following pictures.  The crowd was flat again.  You cannot see it in these pictures, but it was 75-65 UT with about 3:13 to go and there were only about 12,000 still in the stands.  It was 8:00 PM!!!!!

WE CAN LEAVE THE BUILDING WITH MY TEAM IN NEED OF HELP!  Look at those empty seats with my Volunteers struggling at 1:22 to go:

14.5 seconds and I think we led by 3:

We did win in front of about 6,000 at the end.:

If I had to guess I would say the atomosphere is the same at about 80% of the college arenas around the country.  Many of the older age ticket holders (who have the money and connections to get tickets) aren't into standing and screaming the whole game.  Again just a guess.

Gus,

IMO and from observations, most of the ones leaving up stairs are 20-40 years old.  We had 4 20 somethings on our row come in 10 minutes into the game and left with 5-6 minutes to go.

The team needs crowd support, so what does the crowd do?

Coach Pearl deserves more support that what he is getting.

The people that leave early must be for L.A. Those people are infamous for doing that.

I thought the crowd for Gonzaga was pretty loud. Of course, we were sitting underneath the upper level and the noise seems to get pinned in there.

I don't think UT fans understand the game of BB well enough to know when to raise hell. All they do is boo EVERY call that goes against the Vols. Most are probably waiting to find out what "Bowl" game they go to before getting excited.

RockyTop,

I started to point out our skill at booing of the officials.  I love to boo the officials, too, but for most of the crowd that is the extent of their energy release.  No wonder our players whine about the officials endlessly.

Some guy behind me started screaming about "Valentine!"  I didn't realize he was doing the game, but I did turn around and say he sounded like my [SPS] buddy.  My SPS buddy calls him TV Valentine.  He is a show.

My four tickets left early for Gonzaga, UK, and USC and every other home game.

Nothing about the effort, coaching, or discipline suggests that they want my support.  Until they give me a reason to stay, I am leaving when I've seen enough. That is usually about midway through the second half.

Also, me leaving early beats the hell out of not showing like that pathetic student section.  That tells me all I need to know about UT basketball.

The student support is pathetic.
When I was in school, it was hard to get student tickets.
They were usually sold out by the end of the first day.

The Kentucky crowd was one of the quietest I can remember.
My friend VolHunter kept commenting on that.

The loudest the crowd gets is when they start throwing the T-shirts to them.

Did he go to the restroom right after that to wash his hands?
