--Coach Pearl and the boys that is.

OSU led by point very late and halfway through the clock PITT's Fields gets the ball.  Big rear end Blair sprints to the key to set a screen for him.  Blair is not finished and doesn't stand there.  OSU goes after Fields as Blair quickly retreats to set a second screen on Sam Young's guy who has cheated over a little to help with Blair in the lane.  Fields hums the ball over to the open Young above the defenders.  Blair shields Young's guy as Young shoots a comfortable and beautiful three at crunch time for the lead they never gave up.

That was a set play all the way and even had some SET screens in it.  I would like to see Coach Pearl run that play next year with the same effort and effectiveness.

I encourge you to go back and watch it.

That was the most beautiful play of the tournament for me and probably for the year.

What was your most beautiful play of the NCAA tournament?

I don't remember many plays during a game.  I am only watching for fun.
I will say this:  nothing works play wise when you have a team that cannot shoot the basketball.  We are horrible.  We miss 3-4 footers, all the way up to 3 pointers.  Gzism missed 3-4 footers so he goes out and shoots a gazillion 3 pointers.  We can't shoot.  PERIOD  ! ! !   We wouldn't be a #9 seed if we could shoot the ball.

Gus, you are right, this was the worst shooting basketball team in recent history.   But even with that, how many games did the Vols lose because they couldn't get (or hit) a decent shot at the end of a game?   I remember the LSU, Memphis, Auburn, Miss State, and Oklahoma State games just off the top of my head.

don't know what the stats were on fg % because i don't like to read the paper and stats when we go down in defeat. that being said, my gut is we did not make over 50%, especially in the second half on friday. you can't win a tourney game with below 50% unless you are playing GREAT defense. we did neither. hopefully the guards will come to the conclusion in the off-season that you must play great defense and lift weights to gain strength to compete at the highest levels in the college game.  it is more than just looking pretty for the jumper. many players can hit the j in the college game. however, not many can hit the j, play great defense, and operate the press to perfection as a result of superior conditioning, boyh physically and mentally.

Running "great" plays is NOT UT's issue. It's finding someone who can make a layup. Great shooters make great plays. They use to run 1...2...3 screens for Lofton and he would shoot your eyes out. This team needs a hell of alot more than "great plays".

Who said it was a "great" play?

Who said it is UT's issue?

It is a basic play that was well-executed in the Pittsburgh game at a most opportune time.

Executing basic plays over and over well makes "shooters" more comfortable and leads to higher shooting percentages.

OSU did a great job of that in the first half yesterday too.

Lofton didn't have the height, length (favorite BP term) or hops that any of these guys have. But he could score around the rim. Chris was brilliant at scoring in traffic. I've never seen a team this athletic have so many shots stuffed back in their face.

The difference was lofton worked on it tirelessly. When he was on the court, shooting was never a thought process.

Sky, I'm tiring of your continual bashing of Coach Pearl and these players.  The simple fact is, the fans (with you leading the pack) were just not tough-minded enough.  Try and work on that during this off-season.

Some good points.  Be interesting to see who had more shots blocked in their junior years:  Tyler or Chris?

Link,

Does your friend, JC, call Coach Shay, "Jason," "Coach" or just "Neighbor?"
