How many 4 star or better players will Tennessee have on scholarship in 2009? And yes you have to count Crompton, as illogical as it may be.

I was listening to Finebaum today and a caller called in and said Bama is going to have over 50 4 star or better players this year. I'm just curious where Tennessee, or for that matter other SEC schools compare.

If anyone knows this that would be great.

a quick look at Rivals gives us this. Do not know how many are still on the team out of this group.

          4 star   5 star    Rank
2009   9           2        10
2008    4                     35
2007   11          5          3
2006   4            1         23
2005   16          1          4

Total   44          9

For what stars are worth anyway.

Before all the smart comments start with no knowledge, Kiffin signed 4 of the 9 and both of the 5 star guys. However, they lost 6 - 4 star guys that they ran off or whatever, and 2 - 5 star silent commitments that went elsewhere.

Most of the 2005 guys are gone aren't they? I know Hardesty is still here, and Crompton. Not sure what Hardesty was, but Crompton was 4 star. Counting only those 2 from 2005, we have 38 4 star or better on the roster. This isn't taking into account the guys that got ran off, not sure what they were.

We are well behind Bama, but not miles behind. I still contend that there is talent over there. I has just been grossly underdeveloped. I guess we will see if Lane can develop the talent.

It doesn't matter how many stars are on a team.  Once they arrived, they didn't improve for the most part due to an underachieving coaching staff.

Here's a website that might help. Goes back to '02.  Look under BCS signing classes. This is a good stat site

J Crompton was a 5 Star according to Scout. Hardesty was a 4 star CORNER BACK . Coker and Morley join JC as fellow 5 star players, both were tossed....

What about Andre Mathis? A 4 * can't miss LB and ended up a DE who is now buried in the depth chart? He was a 4 star  player who was offered by Michigan ST Ohio St and others....

Slick Shelley left UT for Tulsa and had a very good jr year. He was considered hot stuff and I even thought he had some good practices at UT. Played in the US Army game and caught a TD pass

Quintin Hancock is getting ready to be the go to wr for UT and had a great sophmore season and the kid was a 3 * at best recruit... He got lost in the shuffle down in St Augustine FL among all of that FL talent.

bottom line, without Clawson they would have won 9 last year. Replacing him this year they would have been back to 9-10 wins again. The recruiting class would have been top 3. The beat would have continued. Now the beatdowns will be common place, the NCAA will set up shop and ticket sales are down. Someone out there can do the math.
