Did Skippy's ego get in the way of praise of Coach Jim Chaney for Jonathan Crompton's turnaround?  Looks like Jim Chaney has put more winning quarterbacks in the Super Bowl than Skippy Kiffin?

Apparently, Jim Chaney, our Offensive Coordinator, & Drew Brees go way back:

http://espn.go.com/recruiting/s/chaney.html

Rudedog, Orange Square, and I heard Chaney speak last August at the same class where Orgeron big-timed us.  He said Kiffin would call plays and he would be in the press box and listening.  He said he would probably, "Cough occasionally."    I wonder how much coughling went on?

Jim Chaney is pretty funny based on what we heard.  I will bet he works well with people and some of the massive egos.

I remember he told the 990 bunch last spring that UT was going to be balanced and use zone blocking.

"The greatest quote in Knoxville radio history [was] when Kiffin was hired.  Hyams was interviewing Pete Carroll - Basilio was talking to W. Lynn and Small Mike. Absolutely classic!"

Didn't Crompton become a Christian about the time of the turnaround?

Last year when we hired him I was really impressed with the hire. I linked in an article in wich Bree's praised Chaney for developing him as a QB if you remember. He kind of reminds me of Coach Cutt as far as having a rep for being a QB guru.

Plumber,

I thought he came to Purdue after Drew Brees, but obviously, I was wrong about that.  I don't think he even mentioned Drew Brees when he spoke to us.  [If it had been a Kiffin, there would have been a slide show.]  He was out of work having just been fired from the Rams.  I think he told us he had never been to Knoxville before he was hired.

I think it might work out well for Chaney and my Volunteers.

Some have said that Reaves had the most to do with Crompton's turnaround...I have no idea but that's been offered up...I am glad that Chaney stayed....

I had lunch with Jim a couple of weeks ago. He said that without question Reaves gets all the credit for Crompton. His words. The coaches that watched practice have all said that Chaney spent all his time on the OL with the OL coach. The former coaches that have attended practice routinely and attended meetings all said James is the 2nd best coach on that staff to Monte. Chaney is very well respected and will be great. But he was an OL in college and that is his strength.

Who would you say is the best coach on the imaginary staff Phil had assembled for his imaginary job?  Has he finished interviewing schools yet?

I am going to Google that article I linked in here last year. It was very complimentary of Chaney via Brees. Brees said that Chaney mentored him as far as decision making breaking down film that kind of thing and brought in position coaches to develop his mechanics.....

If Reaves had anything to do with bringing young Cromp along I am sorry we are losing him, but I bet it was a matter of trust
