DD is in the process of completing his staff. One of the priorities he is working on is hiring a coordinator for his character development program.

I know one of the gripes about the Fulmer years dealt with off the field problems, this continued into the Kiffin months. Jackson dealt with academics and student life issues, this goes a step further. My question is this important enough to delegate a coordinator for this position? If the kids character improves and we still are sitting at 8-4 is that good enough? Is this just lip service and spin? Would UT pass on a potential low character guy who is a five * and sign a 3-4* players instead because of a renewed emphasis on charcter issues?

Quote
"Character education - very important to me,  So many of these young men come from different backgrounds, they come from different value sets, they come from different socioeconomic places, and they all have different views of what's right and wrong. Let's face it, when you're 18 to 22, no matter where you came from, you have a big hole in your head. I know I did. I did some of the dumbest things that I can't even believe I did."

"I think it's our responsibility as coaches to help educate them as people. That's not an easy task, so we put in a character education program at Louisiana Tech. It was very successful, it's a rough culture there, and over the course of two years we changed the culture. We started defining what's right and what's wrong and helping them make choices."

I guess all of that remains to be seen. But if he's sincere about character with coaches and players, that gets a big star in my book. I hope he can win a lot of games doing it that way.

This program is historically 67% winning %. In a 12 game season that is 8ish wins. You have to hold DD to that standard and not the out of reach Phil standard.

By the way, T T, what did you get Layne for Valentine's Day??

At this point, I think 8-4 is a dream. I am just hoping we don't end up 5-7 or worse. I am not sure if a character developer would be effective, but if it keeps players from holding up a 7/11 with a BB gun at 11pm on a school night... then i am for it.

8-4 is a dream for about 3 years. 8-4 is the UT destiny and history. That is the glass ceiling. What you hope to avoid is that 3-8 deal. Layne wiped the cubbard clean. He inherited about 8 NFL players and ran off a bunch more. He did not secure the top 3 class that was committed. Layne set this program back to its history. Actually, Hammy should write a book on how to destroy an athletic dept. Anybody see that Raleigh guy lately??

Well, those 8 wins would be enough to roll over Phil's contract.  Instead, his sorry team got rolled over.  7 times.

These kids are student athletes and if some needs to be taught "character" then I wish Tom Dooley all the luck in the world. It's his choice and if it leads to more wins then so be it. Teaching is all part of the college experience so I guess you can throw character in as well. The bottom line is wins and thats what Dooley will be judged by. If he can make men out of these boys he recruits then thats just gravey on the biscuit but he needs to win first and foremost. Nobody is going to give a phuck how much character these guys have if they are going 3-8 every year. Just win and everything else will take care of it's self.

I agree with RT on this one.    I ain't paying that much money for a ticket to see a bunch of A students with good character give a good effort on the football field.

Funny how I have been saying this for years. I do not know these kids, do not want to know them and could care a less what they do. Just entertain me. We know you do not win in football and basketball with choir boys so you get what you ask for. Bail em out and let them play. As Wimp Sanderson said when asked how many of his kids will graduate was "as many as wants to".

To be the devil's advocate did we not trash bitch moan whine and complain from 1997 until Fulmer was fired about the "thug" program he was running. Didn't some FL fan invent the "Fulmer Cup" to describe schools that put teams on the field who were thugs?

So is it win at all costs, or try to win and try to field a team that does not embarass the school?
