Pretty disgusting - horrifying might be a better word.  I know this doesn't represent mainstream "religious right" thinking, but it is scary to listen to regardless, knowing there is an element of our society that calls themselves "christian" and supports this guy and his opinions.  There is simply no daylight between these opinions and those of AQ or the Taliban or the Muslim extremists who do kill fags as a matter of policy, kill "sinners" of all types.  It's a picture of hate and evil on earth in my opinion.

Some select quotes.

We need to stop burning flags and start burning fags.
AIDS is a curse sent from god.
We need hunt-a-homo week.
...put it on television.
Shoot em with a scatter shotgun.

All those followed by cheers, of course.  Nice audience.

The speaker

Pastor Jeff Owens "is a man of great expression, compassion, and wisdom," who currently leads the Shenandoah Bible Baptist Church, "one of America's most exciting churches," a church located in a part of West Virginia that serves as a suburb of Washington D.C. Pastor Owens is "a soulwinner, fervent preacher, and takes an uncompromising stand against sin; but the hallmark quality of Dr. Owens is his genuine love and concern for people."

The love and concern for people is shining through in that sermon.

While doing some quick research on the disgusting Jeff Owens, I came across another Pastor Owens. It is a husband and wife team that is equally disgusting. They are a black couple that have a church in DC. I wonder if you would consider them as "religious right" thinking? Be careful when you think you can paint a picture of hate as being confined to a particular political viewpoint.

Alfred and Susie both are well known in the DC community for calling out derogatory names like “sissy”, “punk”, “faggot” and the like from the pulpit. And each time they do it, the response is cheers and jeers from a congregation full of other homophobes and mostly frustrated, lonely and bitter women who are looking for husbands,

Check out this "sermon":

I'm not going to defend any piece of human debris like the "Pastor" above just because they're black or might have voted for a democrat.  There are pieces of garbage like that in all walks of life.

As an aside, I couldn't listen to the sermon or read a transcript....

PPS.  Do you think there were any adulterers in that audience?  Those that abandoned their kids, don't pay child support.  How about child abusers?  My guess is yes to all three. I don't know if the Pastor condemned them similarly, called for a "hunt a cheater" day or for "men" who don't step up as fathers to their children, but maybe so....  I kind of doubt it somehow.  People feel much more at ease condemning people they don't know and who aren't part of their life or the lives of their social circle.  THEM SONS of BITCHES over there are easy to hate, I've discovered.

Agreed. However, I couldn't help but notice you had to include this statement in your first post:

I know this doesn't represent mainstream "religious right" thinking

Sort of labels the garbage don't ya think?

Maybe it's a lifetime of experiencing gay bashing from so called religious conservatives who associate with the GOP.  I don't have to go back too far on this place to find a thread that bashes gays as pedophiles, mentally ill, equivalent in moral terms at least to child molesters and rapists, those who engage in bestiality.  If you believe that, burning fags is an admittedly extreme solution to the problem, but there is general agreement on the type people that are fags - detestable scum who are undeserving of any human compassion.

One of the memories that I'll never forget, 17 years ago I think, I had to ride to Nashville with a supposedly religious guy, Baptist, who'd agree in all but the specific language of the preacher I linked to.  More specifically, he thought AIDS was an appropriate punishment for the "faggots," his word, and another term I won't even paraphrase.  I pointed out the kids, women, hemophiliacs. that were getting AIDs and he just sort of shrugged.  I'll never forget it because the hate you must feel for a people to approve of them contracting what was then an absolute death sentence is just immense, IMO.  I always wonder if the people who express such views would think the same way if the fag was their son, or brother, or daughter, their best friend from HS?  Maybe so.  I've met several gay men who once they came out had NEVER spoken to one or the other parent ever again.

It never ceases to amaze me the hate coming from people who claim to love their fellow human beings. Pastor Jeff Owens is a disgrace to all Christians.

The sad part is that I am beginning to think this hate monger is not that atypical, especially in the Bible Belt South. There are just too many examples like this one.
