Federal Gov't Halts Sand Berm Dredging

The federal government is shutting down the dredging that was being done to create protective sand berms in the Gulf of Mexico.

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, who was one of the most vocal advocates of the dredging plan, has sent a letter to President Barack Obama, pleading for the work to continue.

"Once again, our government resource agencies, which are intended to protect us, are now leaving us vulnerable to the destruction of our coastline and marshes by the impending oil," Nungesser wrote to Obama. "Furthermore, with the threat of hurricanes or tropical storms, we are being put at an increased risk for devastation to our area from the intrusion of oil.

There are good reasons why an offshore artificial dredging operations has huge negative trade-offs.  If you're competent to discuss them, let's hear it.  I'm not, but I have read there are problems created by them that are arguably worse than the problem they're supposed to address.  I really think this is an issue of well meaning people on both sides weighing the terrible effects of either policy and coming down on different sides of what is the best terrible option.

I suppose doing nothing would be better.

I have one suggestion: can we get Obama and Biden to go on a worldwide golf tour and let things sort of run themselves? I think that would be a huge positive trade-off.

Sas, I would agree on the condition that we revoke their citizenship as soon as they land somewhere else.

Could we just be using our resources in an area a little more needy?

We are creating berms to help in the clean up vs long term use of berms in the LA Delta
