I am going to bump this post periodically to see if the president has made good on this promise. I know the president has been in office over 1.5 years now. Any word on if he has made good on his promise of closing Gitmo yet?

Obama said after the inauguration that he hoped to close Guantanamo within one year, and administration officials admit they won't make that deadline. During the campaign, Obama gave himself no such deadline, and we're judging him here on his campaign promises. He said he would close Guantanamo Bay, and concrete steps are being taken to do so. The promise remains In the Works.

LTC, you can't deny that the status quo has remained firmly intact.  And the anti-Gitmo anti-war crowd has mysteriously disappeared.  By no means is this an endorsement of either Gitmo or the wars.  Just stating an obvious fact that my forum-mate J.W. has astutely pointed out.

The DC political class, of which the president is king, does not care in the least what those who elected them want or do not want. The US, since January 21, 2009, has been ruled over not governed. The pleasantries and civility of your posts are underwhelming. I thought you liberals were for everyone getting along and opposed to rank partisanship. We were told president Obama was the first post-partisan and post-racial president. You could have fooled me on both counts.

I did not ask If president Obama "was trying" to close down Gtmo or if he was "working on" closing down Gitmo or if he gave the old "college try" in closing down Gitmo. My question was and the issue still is as follows: Being that president Obama has been in office for over 1.5 years has the Gitmo Islamoterriorist Detention facility in Guantanamo Cuba been closed down as the president solemnly promised during the Democrat primaries back in 2008?

The truth is as JR stated...not that Obama has not closed it yet, but that those who were so adamant about denouncing Gitmo and demanding it's closure under Bush are now for all intents and purposes silent, if indeed this is just because they've been told by Obama  he will close it, then Republicans need to take heed, all they have to do is make promises they never actually intend to keep and the libs should be just as  happy (right)....then again we must also remind people that Obama did promise that his executive order would keep federal funds from paying for abortions under Obamacare.... and he would have an open government.
