There is some serious discussion going on in this area about bringing Chief home as the next TN HC. Could he handle the job? From some of the insiders at UT the belief is the power boosters are ready to make such a move. That is nothing that could be accomplished this year because LSU is in the NC game and TN is going to give DD another year even if it meant TN went 0-11. But IMHO this move will start mid October of next year.

Understand UT will not target some high profile Coach and toss 6-8 million at them, but they would spend that money to build a top notch staff around Chief. I just wonder how he would work out dealing with press etc.  Any thoughts?

Hell he carried all that weight on his shoulders as Fulmers assistant for years, I'm sure he could handle being HC at UT. Yeah I think Chief can get the job done only thing Fulmer would be crying like a big baby that he was stabbed in the back and that he made Chavis what he is today and look how he's paid in return. Everyone has always known that Fulmer wouldn't hire quality coaches like King Johnny did for fear that they would do to him what he did to King Johnny. When they hire Chavis after next year Fulmers fears will be realized although not in the same way he was afraid of.

I see the same irony that you point out Native, and I really do wonder if Fulmer actually thinks he could return(he can't) I wonder if Chavis will Keep Wilcox around and what part of the KY staff he might bring in here(Sanders Tee Martin etc) I could be 100% wrong but I actually believe this time next year everybody will be talking about what Chavis's first recruiting class at UT will look like.

I want to say I hope Chavis does not bring Cutt back with him. I expect Duke to upchuck ole David soon and he will be looking for a gig. I would just as soon see some new blood on the offensive side of the ball. I hope recruiting does not fall off any worse than it has been the last couple of years as we begin the transition into the next chapter. 2012 will be pure hell on the fanbase and I guess I just want to get it over with. I hate to wish away a year of my life but does anybody look forward to a root canal or a hemorrhoid operation?

Never would have thought this a good idea. But considering the state of UT football, I'd be for it. Dooley has to win 8 games. I don't see anything less keeping his job, and I only see five sure wins on the schedule. He will have to win all non-conference and three conference games beyond beating Vandy or UK to get to eight wins. Can Dooley win five conference games?
And if he does, should he keep his job? He could find a way to overcome his history and win eight games. But, UT could still do that and beat only one team of significance. Let's say UT wins against Vandy, UK, Mizzou, Mishitt. and SC. Is that really good enough in year three?

Anyone counting NCstate, Miss.St., or Missou as instant wins is crazy.
So Vandy, UK, Troy, Akron, and GaSt. should be wins. Beyond that Dooley has his work cut out. He has never beaten a team with a winning record. He will have to do that to keep his job.

Chavis has done it, and will have coached two teams that have played in the NC game. To say his resume and credibility are better than Dooley's may be the understatement of the century. I think the hire would unite the UT fanbase. The big question would be recruiting, but you would have to think his credentials would go a long way in opening doors to top prospects.

It would definitely depend on what staff he would bring in and
recruiting. I don't know if it would reunite the fan base. Alot of those
that didn't like Fulmer don't like Chavis either.

I agree ole Rude One, but I suppose a segment will never be happy.

The way this has all played out it is worse than major sanctions.

The story on Chavis was that the past staff used Chavis as a closer during recruiting. With all the restrictions on contact it is ironic that UT sent Fulmer on the road and kept Chavis at home as a closer. If we can get some great on the road recruiting staff to get them on campus we will be alright with Chavis. I would luv to pick old Swampy's brain on this subject. All of the past players I have talked to love the idea and think it is just about the only option TN has.

This is the damndest situation I have ever seen, DD has absolutely no support anywhere to keep him here. The only debate I have heard is if TN would be out of line to go ahead and fire the guy now or wait until the end of next year to do what is inevitable. DD is not a stupid man and he has to know the situation he is in. I bet if he had it to do over he would have passed on this job. I am one of the minority that thinks the guy will land on his feet and will be heard from later as a HC somewhere else. I just hope the area is not to brutal on the guy, he has young children and a wonderful family that does not deserve what I fear is in store for the entire family next year.

There could be 3rd and Chavis references on offense as well as defense.

Not to be a stickler, but Cincy is 9-3 and if Vandy wins today they will close with a winning record.

Also, don't forget Montana.

Has Chavis sent resumes to openings @ schools like Southern Miss, Memphis, or Arkansas State?  If he wanted to be a head coach, it seems like his name would have been mentioned as a finalist for an opening somewhere.  Can anyone name a head coaching job that Chavis was a finalist for?

I believe he was a candidate for the ECU job several years back.

Chavis has had opps to be a HC and turned them down while at TN, at the time he said he was not interested in being a HC. This last summer in an interview he said he was interested in being a HC if the right opportunity came along
